After a significant storm rolls through Central Indiana, it’s natural to wonder whether your roof took a hit. The tricky part is that not all damage looks the same, and what seems minor from the ground can turn into a real problem if it goes unaddressed. At the same time, not every imperfection on your roof means you need an insurance claim or a full replacement. Knowing what to look for — and what it actually means — can save you both money and stress.
What storm damage typically looks like
Hail is the most common culprit in the Indianapolis area, and it leaves behind some pretty distinct signs. On asphalt shingles, hail hits show up as dark, circular dents where the granules have been knocked loose. Run your hand across the shingle and you’ll feel it — almost like a bruise. You might also notice granules collecting in your gutters or downspouts after a storm, which is a reliable indicator that something worth looking at has happened up top.
Wind damage tends to show up differently. Lifted or missing shingles, creased shingles along the edges, or shingles that have started to curl back at the corners are all signs that strong winds got underneath them. Even if the shingle is still in place, a crease or a seal that’s been broken means water now has a potential entry point.
What normal wear actually looks like
Roofs age. That’s just the reality of living in a state with the temperature swings we deal with every year — hot summers, cold winters, and everything in between. Normal wear includes gradual granule loss across the entire surface (not concentrated spots like hail leaves), shingles that are starting to curl or cup uniformly with age, and minor cracking on older shingles that have simply dried out over time.
The key difference is pattern. Storm damage tends to be concentrated and inconsistent — you’ll see impact marks in random spots, or damage that follows the direction the wind was coming from. Age-related wear is more uniform across the whole surface.
Why it matters for your insurance claim
Insurance companies distinguish between storm damage and normal wear and tear, and that distinction affects whether your claim gets approved. If your roof has legitimate storm damage, you deserve to have that documented properly. If it’s mostly age, filing a claim won’t get you far — and could affect your rates. We’ve worked with plenty of homeowners in Carmel, Noblesville, and Fishers who weren’t sure which situation they were dealing with. An honest inspection gives you a clear answer before you make any decisions.
