When talking about the components of a good roofing system, many homeowners won’t mention the word “pitch.” This term refers to the angle of the roof’s slope. Though it helps define your roof’s aesthetic, it actually serves a purpose and is considered an essential component.
In today’s post, Tedrick’s Roofing, your local roofing contractor, discusses the roof pitch further and how it is calculated.
The Main Purpose of the Roof Pitch
Your roof’s pitch plays an important role, especially when it comes to dealing with the elements. It determines how fast the water flows down from the roof during periods of rain or snow. The roof’s ability to shed water is relative to how steep your roof is.
How to Determine Roof Pitch
Learning your roofing system’s pitch requires a level and tape measure. You’ll need to gain access to a rafter to be able to measure it, which means getting up into the attic. Place the level horizontally along the rafter, making sure it makes contact with the sheathing. Adjust it until the bubble is centered in the vial. Clamp the level to the rafter.
With the tape measure, hook it from the point where the level meets the sheathing and extend it further up until the 12-inch mark. That’s the run. Next, place the tape at that mark, and extend it up the roof deck. That’s the rise. Roof pitch is expressed as the ratio of the vertical distance (rise) to the horizontal distance (run).
Pitch Types Found in Every Roof
The roof’s pitch can be either low or high. Low-pitched roofs are common in commercial properties, ranging between 2/12 and 5/12. They require maintenance given that they don’t shed water as efficiently as their steeped counterparts.
Pitches ranging from 6/12 to 12/12 are considered steep slope, showcasing the property’s triangle-shaped cover. They have excellent water run-off properties, which is helpful for homeowners living in areas with rain or snow.
